The Royal Commission into veteran suicide has to ‘fix it for our veteran community’

Liberal MP and veteran Gavin Pearce says the announcement of the Royal Commission into veteran suicide “was a relief” and he wants to see the Commission make sure the recommendations are implemented. “If we look at an ordinary Royal Commission, an off the shelf Royal Commission, it doesn’t have the ability to reach back on its own recommendations and to ensure those recommendations are implemented appropriately,” he told Sky News. “We need to fix this, make no mistake, we need to fix this for our veteran community and our serving personnel … we are going to make sure this is the one that fixes it.” Mr Pearce said the damage to veterans’ mental health was not due to any particular war but “prolonged periods and repeat deployments” into battle leaving veterans without the support they would usually have.
