CHENNAI: A group of DMK men ransacked an Amma canteen at J J Nagar in Chennai on Tuesday morning. They broke name boards and threw vegetables on the ground.
The incident happened two days after the DMK emerged victorious in the assembly election. Amma canteens were launched by late AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa in 2013 to provide quality food at subsidised prices.
A video of the act went viral in social media. As news spread, around 50 people gathered there and raised slogans demanding action against the miscreants.
The J J Nagar police rushed to the spot and inspected the canteen.
AIADMK leader and former minister D Jayakumar condemned the act. He demanded stern action against the men who ransacked the canteen that fed hundreds of people during floods and the pandemic.
DMK leader Ma Subramaniam said the party had taken disciplinary action against the cadre who ransacked the Amma canteen. Two of them — identified as Navasundar and Surendran — have been expelled from the party.
As per the direction of party leader M K Stalin, suitable legal action would be taken against them for damaging the name board of the Amma canteen, he tweeted.
Meanwhile, DMK functionaries reinstalled the name boards.
